The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court here on Wednesday
ordered an interim stay on the operation of a notification issued by the Joint
Commissioner of Srirangam Sri
Ranganathaswamy Temple ,
calling for applications from Brahmins for various posts in the temple.
The notification issued on February 13, 2013, invited applications
from only Brahmins for the post of ‘pradhana alaya sripadham’, ‘upakoil
sripadham’, ‘sannithivasal’, and ‘upakoil parisarakar’, claimed petitioner V.
Aranganathan (25), a native of Thiruvannamalai. No condition was laid for
application of posts such as junior assistant and ‘pradhana alaya kavalar’.
“There cannot be any discrimination in public employment on the
basis of caste. The impugned notification violates Articles 14 and 16 of the
Constitution. It also amounts to 100 per cent reservation for the four posts,”
he contended.
The petitioner argued that the impugned notification encourages a
caste-oriented clergy in the temple, which is against the constitutional
philosophy. Therefore the notification should be declared illegal and quashed,
he said.
Justice D. Hariparanthaman admitted the petition and stayed the
operation of the impugned notification on Wednesday.
